If you’ve spent any amount of time on TikTok lately, you’re probably familiar with the fact that tinned fish are having a moment. (Seriously, I want whoever is running the PR for tinned fish to run my entire life.) People on the app can’t get enough of anchovies, smoked oysters, and the girly-pop-crowned “most popular tinned fish out there”: sardines.

For the unfamiliar, sardines are small fish that live in the ocean. They are often grilled or eaten straight out of a can, where they are typically packed in oil, water, or other various liquids like tomato juice. When eaten, the heads are typically removed, but the bones and the skin are generally ingested. They have a mild-to-strong salty, fishy taste that differs depending on what they’re cooked with. A simple Google search will tell you that sardines are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids, including magnesium, iron, calcium, vitamin D, zinc, and potassium, just to name a few. It’s also easy to learn that they are considered part of a healthy diet. But if you eat enough of them, will they actually make your skin glow? Many people on TikTok believe the answer to be yes.

Users have been sharing their “skin-care routines,” and by that, we mean their diets, which consist heavily of sardines. We’re a little wary when it comes to trusting TikTok trends, so we decided to tap our experts and have them do a little myth-busting for us.

Ahead, two experts break down everything to know about how sardines can affect your skin. Keep scrolling to learn more.

Katya Khayutin is a master aesthetician and owner of BelVer Studio.
Brianna Diorio has her PhD in integrative medicine and MS as a clinical nutritionist as well as the director of product education at Nutrafol.

Can Eating Sardines Improve Your Skin’s Appearance?

The short answer? It might. Sardines have a high content of omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins, which are all things that help support glowing skin. “Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their role in modulating and supporting healthy inflammatory responses, which can play a role in acne and can help maintain the integrity of the skin barrier, which helps to retain moisture,” Dr. Diorio tells PS. “These fatty acids can also play a role in supporting the production of ceramides, and free fatty acids in the skin, which are important for a healthy stratum corneum—the outermost layer of the skin.”

What Are the Other Skin-Care Benefits of Eating Sardines?

So, what skin-related concerns can eating sardines help with? As previously mentioned, sardines are a nutrient-dense food, and eating them provides several different vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. “Eating sardines can help address skin-related issues such as acne, aging, and inflammation from conditions like eczema and psoriasis,” Khayutin says. “The omega-3 fatty acids in sardines reduce acne severity and skin inflammation, while the protein and nutrients support collagen production, diminishing wrinkles and fine lines.”

Want to dig even deeper? “Omega-3s are found in the phospholipid bilayer of skin cells, which means they can influence membrane fluidity and function, which is important for maintaining cell structure and promoting healthy skin,” Dr. Diorio says. “The antioxidants and vitamins found in in sardines, like selenium, B12 and even zinc, can also protect skin against oxidative damage and support skin repair, while vitamins vitamin D play a multifaceted role in skin health by regulating cellular processes, supporting the skin barrier, modulating immune responses, and promoting overall skin health.”

A typical serving size of sardines is roughly three to four ounces, and if you’re looking to add them to your diet to support skin health, try eating one serving two to three times a week. One thing to note, however, is that both Dr. Diorio and Khayutin caution against adding anything to your diet without first consulting with a physician. “I frequently advise my clients to consult with a nutritionist to ensure their diet supplies essential nutrients that can significantly enhance their skin’s health,” Khayutin says. “However, it’s crucial to adopt a holistic approach: integrate a balanced diet with a comprehensive skin-care regimen, effective sun protection, and other healthy lifestyle practices for optimal results.”

Hair Theory, Explained by Hairstylists /hair-theory-explained-by-hairstylists/ /hair-theory-explained-by-hairstylists/#respond Tue, 13 Aug 2024 00:56:59 +0000 https://easterngifts8.com/hair-theory-explained-by-hairstylists/

Have you ever experienced a bad hair day that completely threw you for a loop, or a good hair day that changed your entire week? Maybe you’ve noticed that every time you wear a slicked-back bun, people seem to take you more seriously, but every time you throw your hair up in a messy style, you get side-eye. Curious as to why? Well, everyone on TikTok thinks they have an explanation, and it’s called hair theory.

For the unfamiliar, people are convinced that how you wear your hair — the length, color, and style — influences both how you look and how you’re perceived. The hashtag #hairtheory has more than 500 million views and counting, so if you haven’t yet given the idea of hair theory much attention, it might be time to start. Not sure where exactly to start in your research? Ahead, we chat with professional hairstylists who answer all of our questions about hair theory, including what it is and whether it actually makes a difference.

What Is TikTok’s Hair Theory?

“The ‘hair theory’ on TikTok claims that the way your hair is styled can change how you look and are perceived by others,” says celebrity hairstylist Clayton Hawkins. “Ask anyone who’s ever changed their hair color or thrown a wig on, and they’ll tell you: people absolutely treat you differently depending on how your hair looks.”

Not only can it affect how others perceive you, but it can also affect how you personally feel. Think about it. Have you ever had a bad hair day that left you feeling completely down in the dumps? Alternatively, a good hair day that left you feeling more confident than ever? Maybe you switched up your part for a night out with your friends and found the compliments rolling in.

So, what factors yield the biggest impact? Hair color, for one, can make a difference, as well as cuts and styles that are done specifically to accentuate certain facial features. “There are absolutely certain haircuts that complement different face shapes,” says Andrew Fitzsimons, celebrity hairstylist and founder of his eponymous hair-care brand. “For someone with a rounder face, a short, blunt cut can really help elongate the face and create soft angles. I’d recommend long layers for someone with an oval-shaped face to create lots of movement, paired with bangs if you’d like to conceal more.”

The overall style matters as well. In a TikTok video, user Nicole Smith shows a side-by-side photo of Jennifer Lopez and “Golden Girls” actor Estelle Getty. “They are both 50 in this picture,” Smith says in her video. While pointing to the photo of Getty, Smith asks, “Do you think if she had a different hairstyle she’d be perceived as looking younger? The answer is yes.” Smith then shows photos of other “Golden Girls” actors with different hairstyles, and it’s hard not to agree that the updated hairstyles make a difference.

Fitzsimons says long, loose waves are perfect for achieving an effortless, youthful look. Hawkins adds that full, voluminous hair will always make you look “beautiful and younger, regardless of your texture.” On the other hand, “for a more mature look, a sleek ponytail or bun can add a sophisticated touch as there’s more focus on your facial features and less hair to play with,” Fitzsimons says.

Still, while most of us might be considering hair theory for the first time, it’s something stylists are constantly thinking about. “What I love most about TikTok’s hair theory is that it’s an insider’s view of what we as hairdressers do every day, behind the chair,” says Chris Jones, co-owner of Salon Bugatti. “It’s a breakdown of what we discuss during every consultation with the clients. If I can marry hairstyle with lifestyle, then I know I’ve done my job as a stylist.”

When I think about beauty tools that have gone viral, the first product that comes to mind is Revlon’s One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer. Not only does it have more than 360,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, but I honestly can’t scroll my TikTok feed without seeing at least one person using this fan-favorite blow-dryer brush. It’s easy to see why: not only is it affordable, but it’s helped countless people achieve salon-worthy blowouts from the comfort of their own homes. Although this product has amassed what can only be described as a cult following, users still had suggestions for improvement. Revlon’s response? The One-Step Volumizer Plus ($37, originally $70).

I tried out the older version of Revlon’s blow-dryer brush, but the brush head was a little too big for me and made it difficult to nail down my go-to style. Also, I didn’t love the heat settings because it felt like the high heat was too much for my hair, but the low setting was too low to set the style I was looking to achieve. In the end, it left my hair feeling a little dry and dehydrated, so I opted to use a different tool for my at-home blowouts.

However, my best friend uses the older version and swears by it, so when I heard about the improvements and the smaller brush attachment on the newest version, I decided it was time to give the blow-dry brush a second chance. After I started seeing glowing reviews for the newer version on TikTok I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. When I received it in the mail, I eagerly awaited wash day so I could finally test it out — spoiler alert, it was everything I wanted and more.

Keep reading for everything you need to know about the product, as well as my before and after photos.

About the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus

  • The most recent tool has ceramic-titanium tourmaline technology, which helps reduce heat damage and protect hair against it.
  • It has low, medium, high, and cool heat settings for easy customization. (The previous version only had low, high, and cool.)
  • While the original version had a 4.25-inch oval brush, the newest version comes with a 2.4-inch oval brush.
  • The brush head is detachable for easy storing and traveling.

What I Like About the Revlon Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus

The biggest difference I noticed between this brush and others I’ve used in the past is how well my hairstyle stayed put. Although I think I’ve pretty much mastered the ’90s blowout, I’ve often found that the look can fall throughout the day if I don’t use a ton of hairspray or texture spray. I didn’t use either after the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer, and my flipped-in ends lasted even after a night of sleeping on them.

While my hair sometimes felt dry when using the older version of this blow-dryer brush, my experience with the newer version was the opposite: it was smooth and shiny.

How to Use the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus

When wash day finally arrived, I prepped my damp, clean hair with a leave-in conditioner, hair oil, and a heat protectant. I then waited until my hair was about 85 percent dry, and I separated it into sections. I started out by running the brush through my ends, then curled and flipped the hair under. I repeated those steps for the middle and top sections, and in the end, I was left with a perfect blowout.

What to Consider Before Trying the Revlon One-Step Volumizer Plus

My only wish is that this tool had an option for different attachments, but with the detachable head as a brand-new feature, who knows what Revlon has in store for the future. Still, if you’re looking for an affordable way to achieve a salon-worthy blowout without ever stepping foot outside of your house, either add Revlon’s One-Step Hair Dryer to your cart or add it to your wish list ASAP.
